How do we define cultural diversity in artistic practice, and how can we protect and promote it? What is the relationship between politics and theatre? How can artists persuade government and funding agencies that Canadian theatre is just as sexy as Canadian film and television, and what are the most effective means of advocacy? Why do people continue to work in theatre despite the historically low pay, poor working conditions, and small audiences? These were some of the provocative issues raised at the second national Canadian Theatre Conference, held in Ottawa May 29 through June 1. The event brought together over 300 English-language theatre professionals from every region of the country and every aspect of the industry - playwrights, actors, directors, designers, technicians, general managers, stage managers and administrators - to discuss shared concerns and help shape the future of Canadian theatre. At the conference closing session, independent rapporteur Tom McSorley (theatre critic for CBC Radio One in Ottawa, and Director of the Canadian Film Institute) noted that the Canadian theatre community faces some tough challenges, including how and why to make theatre. The purpose of this national gathering, McSorley concluded, was not necessarily to find answers but to think of ways to ask better questions - of ourselves, of our audiences, and of our theatre critics. A working group made up of representatives of the conference partner organizations will follow up on these and other issues raised during the conference, and explore ways to bring them to the attention of appropriate bodies. Conference highlights included an opening reception on Parliament Hill attended by Heritage Minister Sheila Copps; a keynote speech by award-winning creator, writer and director Daniel Brooks; and the presentation of the Ontario Arts Council's 2002 John Hirsch Director's Award to Jennifer Tarver, Toronto-based director, producer, playwright and performer. In his keynote address, Daniel Brooks spoke about how society's voracious obsession with speed and efficiency has compromised artistic quality, love of the product, and the meaning and dignity of work in the theatre. Lamenting the pressures of trying to create truly powerful theatre in only three to four weeks of rehearsal, Brooks said, "The essential problem in our theatres is lack of time. If I were to ask the people who work behind the scenes in Canadian theatre for one thing, it would be to take this plea for more time to heart, and consider seriously whether or not we actually do squander some of the beauty that is theatrical time." The Canadian Theatre Conference was organized jointly by Associated Designers of Canada (ADC), Canadian Actors' Equity Association (CAEA), the Canadian Institute for Theatre Technology (CITT), Playwrights Union of Canada (PUC), and the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT). The host venue was the National Arts Centre. The partner associations gratefully acknowledge the support of Human Resources Development Canada (Labour-Management Partnerships Program) and the Canada Council for the Arts. The next Canadian Theatre Conference will be held in 2006. But how do we distill the needs of over 5000 men and women, of all ages, across disciplines, regions and disparate working realities? In a nutshell, Equity needs your input. Why did you join? Where do you go to get information? How are we doing? For the first time ever Equity will conduct a broadscale assessment of membership needs, concerns and trends. Completely anonymous, the survey results will be independently compiled and analyzed. The final report on the results of the poll will be meshed with Equity's strategic plan by helping us identify areas of strength and satisfaction as well as possible misinformation and shared issues. Enclosed in the June issue of the Equity newsletter (print version only), members should have received their copy of the 2002 membership survey. We ask for your assistance in determining: - familiarity of members with CAEA, our mandate and services; - members' perceptions of CAEA's effectiveness; - general satisfaction of members with CAEA's activities, objectives and services. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete and should be mailed by July 1st to Equity's national office (address below). As an incentive, entries postmarked prior to June 30th will be entered into a draw for a $250 cash prize. Here are just a few of the courses and workshops with deadlines coming up (see www.equityshowcase.ca for more details): ~~ **A class with recent 4-time Dora Winner Dean Gilmour** Clowning Workshop with Dean Gilmour #978 For me clown work is very special and important work for any actor but it is very misunderstood. Clown is at the heart of my work along with neutral mask. There is a very false idea of clown that I fight against in my work. In my theatre we search constantly for the "how" not the "why". The pleasure to play can be felt. Unique rhythms can be discovered and played to the maximum, silence prepares us for words, stillness can give value to movement and the emotion can be given to the public. We search in the silent space for a humanity that permits us to glimpse the essence. July 2 - July 19, 2002, Monday, Wednesday, Friday 12:00 - 2:45 (No Class on July 1st for Canada Day - moved to July 2nd) Cost: CAEA $360, Non-CAEA $395 Application with photo, r?sum? & payment by June 26th. Subsidies for Equity members are provided by Equity's professional development fund. ~~ Two Journies: Putting the Artist at the Centre of Creation with Mark Christmann #975 In this course an original theatre piece will be made. The first journey is the examination of text as the departure point for performance including character development, text analysis, theatrical play, and the actor's presence. The second journey is devoted to physical expression and communication, specifically creating dialogues with gesture and space and development of rhythms both personal and shared. Class participants will explore sustaining the moment and taking the action (or narrative) forward, with a versatility of tone and corporeal characteristic. Times: Saturdays 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm Plus Last Week Intensive: Mon, Tues, Thurs & Fri 11:00 am - 4:00 pm July 6 - August 17, 2002 Cost: CAEA $290, Non-CAEA $320 Application with photo, r?sum? & payment by ** extended deadline** July 2nd. Subsidies for Equity members are provided by Equity's professional development fund. ~~ Creating for Mask with Perry Schneiderman #934 This workshop is a three-week intensive introduction to methods for creating with and for character mask. In the first two weeks, the sessions will include improvisation in mask and exercises in written creative expression. The third week will combine all of the elements explored during the first two weeks and will concentrate on the development of finished mask pieces. Days & Times: First 2 weeks Mon, Wed & Fri 1:00pm - 4:30pm; Last week Mon-Fri 1:00pm - 4:00pm July 8 - July 26, 2002 Cost: CAEA $230, Non-CAEA $420 Application with photo, r?sum? & payment by ** extended deadline** July 2nd. Each class is three hours, with a ten-minute break about halfway through to stretch legs, etc. If we run over we can probably stay a bit late, your schedules permitting. It is a condensed intensive class designed to accommodate busy schedules, summer desires, and to get the maximum from the work. Ideal class size is 12-14, no more. From the list of interested students, I'll try to schedule classes to coincide with as many schedules as possible. There is a possibility of a second section of classes that would meet on alternate nights as well. The technique is cumulative and incremental: students enroll for the entire two months and must make a commitment to be there on a regular basis. Outside rehearsal with partners is required. Leads to scene work based on exercises. Also incorporates emotional preparation, personalization, use and strengthening of objectives. Ultimately the goal is to be working fully and spontaneously off the behaviour of the other actor from moment to moment, from your point of view under imaginary circumstances. Will also demonstrate how this technique is easily applied to film and television work. This is a technique class, training the actor to do one of the most difficult things in acting: truly listen. : And to be free and spontaneous, also a challenge. Fee for the entire session is $600CDN for the full 9 weeks. A deposit of $100 is requested to reserve space in the class, $300 due the first class, and the balance of $200 due the last week of July. Equity members are eligible for a 10% discount. Please call (416) 823-8279 for further information or email: bverlaque at hotmail.com ROBERT VERLAQUE completed intensive Meisner training under Master teacher Fred Kareman, and Wynn Handman of the American Place Theatre in NYC. Master classes in several techniques and disciplines including Actor's Studio, Uta Hagen, Stella Adler, and audition techniques contribute to a wide range of knowledge and expertise fine-tuned by 25 years of professional experience as actor, director, teacher and writer. He has worked with acclaimed Broadway directors Mike Nichols, Gerry Gutierrez and Pamela Berlin among others. His students have achieved considerable success in television, film and Broadway. If you did not receive a survey in the June issue of your Equity newsletter and are a member in good standing, please contact Hilary Unger at the Equity national office as per the contact information below. Subsidies for Equity members are provided by Equity's professional development fund. ~~ Corporeal Mime with Victoria Goring #976 No one gets stuck inside a box. Movement theatre classes based on the teachings of Etienne Decroux, founder of modern mime. This physical class gives the actor the skills to move with precision, control, and clarity. Corporeal Mime is a study of how to be a dramatic, visceral presence on stage. A universal technique, Corporeal Mime gives the actor concrete physical tools to use in improvisation, workshopping, and performance. July 8 - August 26, 2002, Mondays 7:00 - 9:00pm (No Class Aug 5th) Cost: CAEA $150, Non-CAEA $165 Application with photo, r?sum? & payment by ** extended deadline** July 2nd Subsidies for Equity members are provided by Equity's professional development fund. ~~ Great Broadcast Performance From The Inside Out with Michael Connolly #958 Are you interested in broadcast journalism and want to improve your on air performance? This course will help you by showing you how to make progress in several key areas. Participants will be taught a series of techniques and exercises and receive individual coaching. They will also take away a videotape of their work. Who should take this course? Anyone interested in getting into broadcast journalism. Journalists in the print medium who want to expand their career opportunities. Actors and writers who are interested in hosting shows or finding new venues for their creativity in the ever-expanding world of the media. July 9 - July 30, 2002, Tuesdays 7:00 - 10:00 pm Cost: CAEA $140, Non-CAEA $155 Application with photo, r?sum? & payment by ** extended deadline** July 3rd. ~~ For any class inquiries please visit our website at www.equityshowcase.ca, contact Jennifer by phone at 416-533-6100 ext. 21 or by e-mail at mail at equityshowcase.ca From kaethe at caea.com Tue Jun 25 16:23:02 2002 From: kaethe at caea.com (Kaethe Yanovsky) Date: Tue Jun 25 16:23:02 2002 Subject: [e-drive][AUDITION: HALIFAX] Message-ID: <56EF6064A71546489901927664B3D2E8095CAF@email-server.caea.com> ~~~~~~~~~~~e-drive~~~~~~~~~ GENERAL AUDITION CALL NEPTUNE THEATRE will be holding General Auditions for its 2002/2003 season on July 15-18 at Neptune Theatre, 1593 Argyle Street, Halifax, NS. He is a permanent faculty member of prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NY.
