Greetings,
It's with great pleasure that I pass on this announcement of Jane's Walk, an
idea that was first conceived at a meeting of the Ontario Smart Growth
Network in February, and which has since taken flight thanks to some great
people and the support of the Maytree Foundation.
Jane's Walk is a way to celebrate what makes our neighbourhoods, communities
and cities work. It encourages people to take a walk, observe and partake
in their community.
For the first year, the organizers have focused on a quick start series of
walks in Toronto, including featured walks led by prominent Torontonians and
others by whoever wishes to post a walk on the website. They will all help
promote the idea that an urban village is a great place to live.
For those outside Toronto who'd like to organize a community walk, please
do! If you send an e-mail to the Jane's Walk coordinator, Suzanne Kulperger
at info at janeswalk.net she will likely be able to help.
Check out the website at www.janeswalk.net <http://www.janeswalk.net/>
With thanks,
Chris Winter

JANE'S WALK - CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF JANE JACOBS
Saturday, May 5th, 2007, Various Times/Location
To honour urban visionary Jane Jacobs, who died a year ago, Mayor David
Miller announced in November 2006 that May 4 would officially be Jane Jacobs
Day in Toronto.
Many of Jane's peers, colleagues, friends and admirers have discussed how
best to honour her legacy and have settled on the idea of "Jane's Walk", to
reinforce her idea of walkable, dense, compact and diverse neighbourhoods as
the hallmarks of a healthy city. These characteristics help knit together
the people of a neighborhood into a strong and resourceful community.
The First Annual "Jane's Walk" will take place on Saturday, May 5, 2007, in
numerous locations throughout Toronto. Each walk will feature a tour guide
who can speak knowledgably about the neighbourhood, and will highlight the
people, places, and public spaces that make that particular community
interesting and unique.
"Jane's Walk" is an exceptional opportunity for Torontonians to discover the
city; both places they think they know well, and places they want to
explore.
