Free Public Forum on planned Halton Region Incinerator and Waste Issues

Halton Region is planning to spend as much as $800 million to build an incinerator. Is this the wisest use of our tax money? Are incinerators the best way to deal with our waste? What are the benefits of incineration? What are the drawbacks? What are the options?

Find out on Tuesday, March 27 when Dr. Paul Connett, recently retired Professor Emeritus of Chemistry from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, who specializes in Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology, speaks in Oakville. Doors open at 7 p.m. at this free public event that will be held at the Galaxy 707, 475 North Service Road East. Refreshments will be available.

Ralph Nader said of Dr. Connett, "He is the only person I know who can make waste interesting." Over the past 22 years Dr. Connett's research on waste management has taken him to 49 US states and 48 countries, where he has given over 2,000 pro bono public presentations. He has co-authored six peer reviewed articles on dioxin and numerous other articles on waste management."

Dr. Connett will be joined by Rod Muir, a waste diversion campaigner from the Sierra Club of Canada, and John Jackson, director of Great Lakes United. This is a timely forum as the Region is currently preparing a business case for the incinerator. It is scheduled to be finished sometime this month. The proposed incinerator is to be built at the Region's landfill on Bronte Road. Connett and Muir's presentation will be followed by a panel discussion that will include Brian Burton, a cost analyst. The panel will answer questions from the audience and discuss waste disposal options.

This free public event, open to all residents of Halton Region, is sponsored by Oakvillegreen Conservation Association and by Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources (P.O.W.E.R.) This event is supported by the Halton Environment Network. For more information call Liz Benneian at 905-257-0250 or email her at lizcdn at yahoo.com.
