Québec Trees to Offset 2,800 Tonnes of CO2

(St-Élie d'Orford, Quebec, May 10, 2007) A
milestone of environmental significance occurred
outside Sherbrooke, Québec today. A ceremony
marking the first treeplant in Québec for carbon
offset purposes occurred. A total of 17,000
trees, mostly white spruce, were planted at
Ste-Élie d'Orford. A ceremonial tree marking the
occasion was planted by Michael Rosen, President
of Tree Canada, Claude Caron, of Caron
Industries, Carole Coursolle (in absentia) of
Fluxnet-Canada, Jonathan Nicol of Baxter
Corporation and Louis Desrosiers of Ideum.ca.

"Seventeen thousand trees from carbon neutral
activities is a significant planting," said
Rosen. "Over the next 80 years these trees will
absorb the equivalent CO2 of 800 cars running for
a year", he said. "As significant as this is, it
is only part of our efforts as we work toward our
75 millionth tree this year."

In 2005, Tree Canada launched its Grow Clean Air
program to encourage carbon neutral events and
companies. Today, eleven companies, including
Baxter Sherbrooke and Ideum.ca of Montréal are
committed to reduce their carbon output and
offset what remains with the planting of trees.
Other companies, like Caron, are planting trees
as part of being a good corporate citizen.

"We stand by our motto--Caron Thinks Green," said
Claude Caron, Vice-President of the Montmagny, QC
kitchen door manufacturer. "Planting 10,000 trees
a year with Tree Canada is part of our commitment
to put something substantial back into the
environment. That number is actually more than we use," he said.

However, the trees will do more than simply
reduce carbon. The 17,000 trees will provide a
wildlife corridor by joining two separated
existing forests on the property of local
landowner Janine and Fernand Hamel. "There are 55
different animal species alone that require holes
in trees to survive," stated Rosen. "In addition
to providing wildlife habitat, these trees will
stabilize the soil, help manage stormwater, and conserve energy," he said.
