EcoSource and MIAG are seeking a
Community Gardens / Learning Gardens Coordinator
(Full-time 35 hours per week, annual renewable contract position)
EcoSource is an innovative environmental organization that empowers the community to become more environmentally responsible through creative public education. The Multicultural Interagency Group of Peel 's mission is to enhance the inclusion and development of diverse communities by building organizational, group and individual capacity through empowerment, innovation and partnerships.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, creative individual to supervise and implement our new and innovative Community Gardens / School Learning Gardens program, based in Mississauga! The Community Gardens / Learning Gardens Coordinator will be a shared position between the two partner groups, EcoSource and Multicultural Interagency Group of Peel (MIAG). The City of Mississauga is also an active partner in this program. This is a 4 year project, starting in January of 2008.
Responsibilities:
Community Gardens Project
Development and Implementation of Community Garden Project including:
Community outreach to create relationships and determine garden site selection
Works with community organizations and broader community to recruit and gardening participants
Outreach to the ethno-cultural community to recruit volunteer gardeners
Collaborates with City of Mississauga in garden site selection process and garden implementation on City-owned lands
Collaborates with private landowners in site selection processes
Develops, coordinates and delivers introductory and educational workshops
Supports gardeners and oversees garden stewardship
Coordinates and delivers garden events (harvest festival and community garden network event)
School Learning Gardens Project
Development and Implementation of School Learning Garden Project including:
Connects with EcoSource Elementary Green Schools to initiate Learning Garden process
Designs garden in collaboration with youth, teacher and school staff participants
Coordinates and plants garden with student and teacher participation
Develops and delivers educational workshops and follow up materials
Qualifications:
Strong knowledge of community gardening, school-based learning gardens and naturalization
Enthusiasm and experience working with diverse cultures and youth
Post secondary education in environmental studies, education or related field and/or equivalent work experience
Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, and comfort in working in diverse settings
Sound program planning, development, implementation and evaluation skills
Excellent networking and public relations skills
Strong computer skills, including all MS Office applications
Familiarity with demographics of the Region of Peel (Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon) community
Second language related to one of diverse cultures in Peel an asset
Experience working in the not-for-profit sector, fundraising skills are assets
Applicants are required to hold a current driver's license. Access to a car is required for this position.
Salary for this full-time position starts at $35 000 with a benefits package. Deadline for applications is Friday November 30th.
Interviews are planned the week of December 10th (candidates must be available for in-person interviews). Desired position start date is early January.
