Green Party
· Invest $300 million over four years in infrastructure programs that foster local marketing and distribution systems that promote local food and provide farmers with a fair share of the consumer food dollar. The GPO's rural infrastructure program will provide support for the development of producer coops, community access post-harvest handling and storage facilities, farm-based business development support for enterprises that supply local markets, support for small-scale and farm-based processing, the promotion of farmer's markets and other projects that assist farmers in obtaining higher returns for their products.
· Establish food procurement rules for provincial food service venues that support the purchasing of local and sustainably grown and processed food products, and create a four-year $40 million renovation fund to assist food service venues to use more fresh products. It makes sense from the environmental, public health and economic viewpoint to buy local sustainable food. The province needs to set the example by buying locally in government food venues.

· promote the sale of fresh, locally produced food through large and small grocers with our $13 million per year investment in Buy Ontario, which not only helps our farmers, but also helps our environment by reducing greenhouse gases caused by transporting food by land or air;
· promote Ontario farmers at farmer's markets in order to encourage Ontarians to buy locally and support Ontario farmers;

· Establishing Foodland Ontario outlets to specially market food products grown by Ontario farmers.
· Enforcing legislation to protect Ontario producers against predatory pricing practices, listing fees imposed by the major retail chains.
· Ensuring the Ontario government buys Ontario food products - starting with a new program to provide milk to Ontario students on a daily basis
· Enacting legislation to ensure that Ontario retailers provide shelf space for regionally produced food.
· Grow Locally Education to promote urban agriculture, community gardens and school yard gardens. Teaching the young and young at heart the virtues of gardening and growing your own food.

Progressive Conservative Party
· A John Tory government will lead a Buy Ontario campaign by example. We will work with farm organizations to develop market mechanisms to give Ontario farmers better access to government buyers of food for hospitals, schools and other public institutions.
· We will sharpen the definition of "grown in Ontario" for marketing purposes and update and expand the "Buy Local" Foodland Ontario campaign to include meat, work with producers and the grocery industry to establish Ontario Foods sections in stores, and better promote the benefits of Ontario food to consumers.
