Subject: Pesticides coming to Council, public meeting dates changed

Hi all,

Changes, they are afoot. Our requests for a Climate Convention and Eco
Committee are coming to fruition in the form of a City Climate Summit with
the Committee soon to be formed. City Staff will advertise for Committee
members shortly. When we note it, we'll forward it out to you. With so
many environmentally aware people in St. Catharines, there's bound to be a
great flow of ideas.

Finally, it's coming to Council!!!
City Council Chambers, 6:30 Monday evening. The last time the Cosmetic
Pesticide issue came to council, we all expected to gain a Cosmetic
Pesticide by-law. City staff has written an excellent report and
recommendation so let's get out and support our Councillors as they take the
bull by the horns and get this passed. Comments and suggestions for our
report to Council are welcomed.

*** Please note ***

Public Meetings are now held at the Centennial Public Library immediately
preceding the Eco Speaker Series (see 07/08 Winter Eco Speaker Series
listings for meeting dates at the end of this newsletter). Meetings begin
at 6 sharp.

Tom is a wonderful speaker, well versed in his topic and able to teach
something of interest to any competent or beginner gardener. Learn methods
practiced for centuries to create a garden or lawn that doesn't require
pesticides.

Putting The Garden to Bed
Banker's Room, Centennial Library, 7-9
October 2, 2007
Prepare your gardens and lawns now to increase soil fertility and to reduce
weeds and insect/pest populations. Learn how to increase plant health
naturally.

Also of note:

The Community Gardens behind Commisso's on Ontario Street will require
assistance to put the gardens to bed. Assistance is appreciated by any who
can help. Please call for inclusion.

CAN Executive have decided to complete only one or two Circle Plantings each
year. By the time we began in earnest, with all approvals in place, it was
July, the heat of the summer. Next year we'll have our permits approved by
early spring to take advantage of spring conditions. The Oakmeadow Circle
has one more planting day scheduled, when the thyme plugs are available from
our donor, Jerry Moes from Broadway Gardens.

The final leg of the Take The Heat Off The Streets 07 campaign, signing up
residents for boulevard street trees, ends next month, when the list will be
forwarded to St. Catharines Parks and Recreation. If you'd like to help or
know of someone who'd like to be included on the list, please contact Joyce
Hanlon at 905-934-0593, or Jan Prudden who tends our Market Square Saturday
table. Many thanks to Jan and her team for their educational efforts.

Stay tuned at the October 2 meeting for 'Save Our Heritage Fruit Trees'.
Port's PROUD will also be at this meeting to give details for their
RUN/WALK/STROLL FOR PORT. Details to come.

Last but not least, Breast Research has created a film series. Upcoming,
Tuesday, October 23rd, 'Lawn and Garden pesticides: Reducing Harm'
Gideon Forman is the Executive Director of the Canadian Association of
Physicians for the Environment CAPE). CAPE has produced a video on lawn and
