Withrow Park Farmers' Market On-site Market Manager Job Opportunity
If you are an enthusiastic and well organized individual who is interested in food issues (particularly organic and local agriculture) and loves to work with the public, this may be the job for you.
The Withrow Park Farmers' Market is a dynamic and upbeat neighbourhood based outdoor market featuring fresh local organic produce, meat and dairy, as well as processed foods and specialty items. The market is open every Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., from late May to late October. We also organize special events throughout the season, and serve the wider Riverdale community. Visit withrowpark.ca for an overview of the 2007 season.
The ideal candidate will need to have good written and verbal communication skills, have management and customer service experience, be able to work with people from different backgrounds, be comfortable using Microsoft Office applications and the internet, and own a mobile phone.
The Market Manager is present at set up of the market (usually 1.5 hours before start of market), and duties involve:
· unlocking the electrical box and the gate (if necessary), retrieving signs, tables and tents from the on-site Parks storage area;
· co-ordinating of volunteers during set-up and break-down;
· supervising the vehicular traffic during set-up and break-down, and the positioning of stalls;
· setting up of sandwich boards and the market info table;
· ensuring that there is no selling prior to 9 a.m., and that market guidelines are followed;
· collection and recording of stall fees and vendor attendance, and issue of receipts;
· ensuring that the site is left in good condition at closing (the area has to be cleared by 2 p.m.), and no refuse is left behind;
· speaking with stall holders, customers and on-site Parks staff, and conveying those comments to the market organizer;
· communicating with the market organizer about producer attendance and making sure that all producers have his/her mobile number so that they can call on the day if they are running late or cannot attend;
· market promotion during operating hours by providing general information to vendors, community representatives, and market shoppers;
The on-site market manager might have to on occasion help vendors with stall set-up, when some heavier lifting might be involved.
The on-site market manager is employed on a freelance basis and receives an honorarium based on 10h of work per week, at $18/h. This is a part-time and seasonal position, from May 1 to October 31.
Application Deadline: April 18, 2007
