ECO FEST NIAGARA

Last month’s 1st Annual Eco Fest Niagara event was amazing. For those of
you who missed it, not to worry, there’ll definitely be another at this time
next year. The Trade Show and Speakers and Workshops were well attended,
and the surveys, ticket stubs and door prize stubs allowed us to estimate
attendance approaching 1000 residents of Niagara. Many thanks again to our
sponsors, supporters and volunteers.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

CLIMATE ACTION NOW is accepting membership fees for April 2008 to April
2009. Membership entitles you to our monthly newsletter chock full of
Niagara eco news, as well as invitations to a host of events over the course
of the year and a membership card. Your membership enables CLIMATE ACTION
NOW volunteers to plant a school naturalization project, host the Eco
Speaker Series and Films or an idling and pesticide awareness campaign.
Your membership also supports CAN with sheer numbers. You’ll find a copy of
the membership form below. Please fill it out and send it in today.

Project CLEAN SWEEP

On Saturday April 19, 2008, the Clean City Committee is once again holding
its Annual Community Clean-up Day. The day will start at 8:30 a.m. with an
opening ceremony at City Hall, 50 Church Street and FREE Tim Hortons coffee,
baked goods and refreshments. The first 300 volunteers to sign in at the
opening ceremonies will also receive a FREE Tim Hortons travel mug

CAN members and friends will proceed to the Terry Fox Trail for 10:00.
We’ll be between Russell Ave and Geneva Street, near the Russell Ave
Community Centre. Bags, gloves and T-shirts are supplied. Let’s welcome
spring with clean trails. Refreshments provided. There’s no number to
call, we’ll meet there.

GARDENING COMMITTEE

Calling all gardeners! Volunteers are wanted for the gardening committee.
This small but dedicated group of volunteers assists the planting of the
Community Care gardens for the needy, works with local residents on the
Oakmeadow Circle, and this year the gardening committee will assist the
Edith Cavell School Naturalization Project along with members of WeCan.
Over a 3 year period, we’ll be planting trees and providing multiple
workshops in Rainbarrels, Greywater conversion, an energy audit, a food
garden plot, window films, indoor and outdoor composting, recycling,
 In
addition, the gardening committee assists where needed, whether it be a
senior who is moving and wants to take perennials with her or a church group
that requires assistance. If you can offer your gardening assistance a
couple of hours a month, please call the number below. Many hands make light
work. 905-938-8882

STUDENT VOLUNTEER HOURS

We welcome the assistance of high school students and encourage you to lend
us a hand. There are several tasks to choose from. We’ll be gardening,
canvassing, hosting the education table, spreading awareness of pesticide
alternatives, and providing an anti-idling campaign. You can gain your
volunteer hours and be doing something fun, that helps the environment.
Call 905-938-8882

SNAP

The editor of SNAP, the people’s magazine would like to make contact with
eco friendly organizations and businesses throughout Niagara that are
hosting an event. Please contact his paper for possible inclusion. He
intends to have a monthly Green Page within the paper. 905-357-4700

BALL’S FALLS CONSERVATION CENTRE

Opening May 9 at Ball’s Falls, is the new Conservation Centre designed for
the Conservation Authority by MacDonald, Zuberec and Ensslen Architects Inc.
It’s a 12,000 square foot building with LEEDS accreditation that is intended
as a teaching tool for water and energy conservation within a natural
setting.

ECO GRASS

For those who ordered Eco Grass from CLIMATE ACTION NOW at the 1st Annual
Eco Fest Niagara event, orders are expected next week. Eco Grass grows at ¼
the rate of regular grass, reducing mowing requirements. In addition, the
roots are up to 6” long, increasing the turf’s tolerance to drought
conditions once established. The seed can be broadcast over existing turf
and will eventually crowd out the regular grass and many weeds. CAN is
offering the Eco Grass Seed in 5 lb bags for 29.99. Larger 50 lb bags are
also available for landscapers. We will continue to accept orders
throughout the year. Spring and fall is the best time to sow. 905-938-8882

ECO FILM FEST HAMILTON

Ripple Effect is hosting an Eco Film Fest from April 22 to the 26th in
Hamilton. Please visit online at www.RippleEffects.ca
<http://www.rippleeffects.ca/> or email us: info at RippleEffects.ca

SIERRA CLUB CALL FOR ACTION

Members of Parliament are paralyzing the work of the Environment Committee
by blocking the Climate Change Accountability Act, Bill C-377. Opposition
parties are united in their support for this bill that would see Canada take
on science based targets to reduce its emissions 25% below 1990 levels by
2020. Conservative members have stalled the committee agenda for 5 meetings
by not letting other members of the committee talk. If they continue, they
could kill this important bill, and block all other work relating to the
environment.

To take action, call, email, write or visit the members of the Environment
Committee responsible for blocking the work of the entire Environment
Committee. Copy your own Member of Parliament, the Prime Minister, and your
local newspaper:

For more detailed information on the Climate Change Accountability Act see

T-SHIRTS

A few of our T-shirts went astray following the Eco Fest Niagara event. If
you’ve taken home one of our white CAN t-shirts with logo, please drop if
off at the office as below. Perhaps one day we’ll put them up for sale but
for now, they’re needed for our volunteers.

THIS MONTH’S TIPS

Please remember to send children to school with litterless lunches and to
turn down your water heater. It’s time to get your Rainbarrels in place for
the growing season and prepare your composter for another season. Having an
event? Visit your local farmer’s market for what’s in season. Let’s try to
do away with all of those imported foods and savour our own.

If you have received this email in error, please let us know. Thank you.
