Transformation. Evolution. Change. Growth. Excitement. The face of downtown is changing – here in Canada, and across the globe. Downtown Calgary invites you to experience a Metro Makeover that's unparalleled in its sheer energy, boldness, and breadth. Incredible new office structures, residential developments, and public spaces are changing the way people work, live and play in this dramatic urban space. Far from cosmetic, this is change from the inside out. There's no better place to talk about change than the Downtown Calgary, host of IDA's 2008 Conference. At the centre of North America's energy industry and in the midst of an economic boom, Calgary has grown exponentially in the past decade, changing the culture of the city and how its residents experience it. Set in the embrace of Canada's majestic Rocky Mountains, Calgary is an ideal example of the changing face of downtown and the perfect place to experience an evolving urban core.

The theme of the conference is Metro Makeover: The Changing Face of Downtown. We will be presenting a “green” theme through hosting one of the first zero waste conferences being held in Calgary. In addition to the environment, public safety, social issues such as homelessness, heritage, and urban design and planning are key topic areas. The Opening Ceremony, being held in Olympic Plaza, will feature the bounty of local produce found within close proximity to Calgary.
The International Downtown Association (IDA) serves as a world leader for vital and sustainable urban centres. Our theme, Metro Makeover: The Changing Face of Downtown, will tell in great colour and depth of the remarkable renaissance in downtowns and town centres worldwide. Through the joint efforts of the International Downtown Association and the Calgary Downtown Association, some of the world’s top experts will present down-to-earth, practical ways that towns and cities can adapt to sweeping changes in the global marketplace. Conference content will address: Environment, Architecture, Transit, Revitalization, Public Safety, Urban Planning & Design, Arts, Culture and Entertainment, Housing and Social issues facing Calgary and other cities around the world. The goal of the conference is to present concepts, best practices and ideas which contribute to safe, vibrant and sustainable urban centres.
We anticipate between 800-1000 international delegates to attend the conference in Calgary. The IDA delegate audience represents a demographic of 50% USA, 20% CDN, 20% Europe and balance from South Africa, Australia, Mexico, South America and to a lesser degree Saudi Arabia and Southeast Asia.
The conference will be held in Calgary at the Telus Convention Centre September 11-14, 2008. Participants will present how realistic strategies and inspired innovations are guiding our industry leaders from New York to London, from Vancouver to Johannesburg, and from Turin to Toronto. Influential decision-makers from around the globe will make this conference a place of unprecedented ideas and opportunities. Joining this group of experts will be mayors and other government officials, leading architects, urban planners and developers, corporate CEOs and executives, social scientists and academicians.
