Subject: Provincial action required

Hi there
Councillor Bonnie Littley, Region of Durham in Pickering here (formerly Rouge Duffins Greenspace Coalition).

It's been awhile since I've lobbied you (ha ha) and congratulations to you Mr. Gerretsen on your new position of Environment Minister although I will miss you at MMAH - love that Greenbelt and Bill 16 the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve Act!!

Anyway, this time I'm forwarding (in the attachment) the latest news from citizens in Durham Region concerning Municipal Waste Strategies IE: the Incinerator project in Durham Region.

Considering the border closing in Michigan, our provincial government needs to take action on waste and provide incentives/laws for business and industry to reduce packaging, disposable products etc., and create "take back" programs including taking responsibility for the waste they create. Of course extensive education on the action individuals can take is also a big part and again the NGO's are leading the charge in that regard.

If the province ignores this soon to be huge issue, as did previous governments on an energy strategy we will all soon be wallowing in an overflowing waste problem. There is a huge potential for manufacturing and job creation, energy conservation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions etc etc using simple principles of the "business case for sustainability" toward waste strategies.

We need some provincial leadership on this issue. It's an issue that we're lagging behind on - and rapidly.

Please read the attachment and I look forward to your response,

Thanks,

Bonnie Littley
Regional Councillor, Ward 1 Pickering

Subject: Well worth a read - responding to the Region's incinerator Q & As

To the Mayors and Councillors of Durham Region:

Hello again,

For the many of you who did not attend last night's information forum, please find attached my latest piece of work regarding the incinerator. In this 4-page document I list verbatim the Region's Questions and Answers about incineration and then provide the real information that the Region has left out. For your information, this document was given out - along with many other excellent resources - to all 300+ (standing room only) audience members who attended the incineration forum last night. It will also be added to the DEW website (durhamenvironmentwatch.org)

I would like to, at this time, extend my thanks to Region's Health and Social Services Committee for standing up against the status quo and voting 4 to 3 that it is necessary to rethink the process we have taken to date in approving the incinerator. This development was announced at last night's forum to tremendous applause. The audience was also thunderstruck to hear that [unelected] Regional Chair Roger Anderson was so angry with this vote that he said he would declare the motion out of order. Just who is in charge in Durham Region? What the heck is going on?

Perhaps I should also raise at this point that I have been surprised to hear lately that some Regional Councillors and staff are still spreading myths and half-truths about incineration (particularly Clarington's municipal Councillors). If you'd like to start dealing in the whole truth, I encourage you again to read my first two reports, presented to you at the November and December Regional Council meetings. For those who have perhaps lost their copies, you can now find them online:

You can download Debunking the Myths of Incineration at:

http://www.durhamenvironmentwatch.org/Incinerator%20Files%20II/REPORT%20FINALK2.pdf

My second report, Incineration Today and Tomorrow: The Effects on Durham Region's (and Neighbour's) Children can be found at:

http://www.durhamenvironmentwatch.org/Incinerator%20Files%20II/REPORT%20FINALK2.pdf

Thank you for your time and consideration.
