The Don Watershed Regeneration Council wrote to the University of Toronto last fall in regards to the sale of the DDO. The Council pointed out that the property consists of 69 hectares of natural cover with forest, successional habitats, and old field meadow. It provides 9% of the natural cover of the German Mills subwatershed and is included in the long-term natural system goal for the Don watershed.
There is potential for development of interior forest and enhancement of the existing natural cover to increase species biodiversity and create linkage through the rail corridor to German Mills Creek.

Deer currently use the rail corridor to leave the property. Over 40 species of birds have been seen through the fall and winter. Some are birds normally seen further north.
