In early February, farmers in the Kingston area will have an opportunity to explore the challenges and benefits of providing food for local markets, in a new workshop presented by the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario (EFAO) and the National Farmers Union (NFU) Local 316. 

The workshop will be of interest to both new farmers and experienced farmers interested in new marketing opportunities for their farm produce. The participatory workshop will cover topics like ecological production, food quality, successfully raising and selling livestock for a local market, community supported agriculture and additional training opportunities. Guest speakers, Janet Duncan of Dunbrae Farm in Almonte and Dan Brisebois of La Ferme Cooperative TourneSol near Montreal, will share their success stories of local food production and marketing. 

"This workshop is an excellent chance for farmers to further explore the challenges and benefits of producing for local markets, learning first-hand from other farmers about successful approaches," says workshop organizer Ian Stutt, from NFU Local 316. "It also addresses the need to increase our supply of local food as Local 316 works to develop a local food system for Kingston and countryside." 

The two-day workshop, sponsored by Heifer International, will be held on February 8 and February 9, in Sunbury. Cost is $30 per person or $50 per farm, Saturday lunch included. Pre-registration is required.
