  Subject: Threatned Carolinian Forests

This is a submission to the Get Smart network about two threanted forests in the City of Niagara Falls. Many thanks, John Bacher

The Whilloughby Clay Plain is a Carolinian Canada Signiature Site, since it is one of the largest remaining concentrations of these forests surviving in Ontario. At the northern edge of this complex, are two Carolianian Forests which are threatened by residential development proposals contained in Amendments 81 and 82 to the Niagara Falls Official Plan. In addition to both areas being Big Picture Core habitats, they are part of the Lanad Care Niagara Natural Heritage Corridor Program identified by Land Care Niagara.

It is important that the northern edge of the Whillougbhy Clay Plain not be frayed by urban sprawl. To prevent this from happening, it is important that Amendments 81, and 82 not be approved. This can be done through three complimentary steps. These areas can be re-evaluated as wetlands. A ministerial zoning order can be imposed to protect them. Also the province can support the appeal of Dr. John Bacher, against these amendments at the Ontario Municipal Board.
