RE Kingston's urban boundary expansion.
Please consider including my Pickering News Advertiser, Letter To The Editor
that is below, as part of a future Get Smart release and as part of a
presentation to Kinston Town council and/or the Kingston Planning
Department.
I believe my letter addresses the main issues facing Kinston, Ontario today.
It was printed in the Pickering News Advertiser on Wednesday, April 30th,
2008.
"To whom it may concern.
Many times while reading Criteria For Greenbelt Expansion, I came upon the
phrase " lands required to meet the needs of growing communities".
Has it not occurred to the powers-that-be, that man cannot continue on the
olde framework of growth? Paving farms and cutting down forests to bolster
an economy, or for any other reason, must stop, now! Urban boundaries must
expand no further.
40% of farmable land in Southern Ontario has now been suffocated by
concrete, asphalt and urban sprawl. Is there no end to this madness?
If there is a need for more businesses or homes, municipalities must build
from within. Gone are the days where our economy can be based on a perpetual
and permanent raping of the land.
Where is our clean water, clean air and local food going to come from if
we keep legitimizing our need to eradicate our natural resources?
There are over 6 billion people on this planet and we are a dangerous
species. We move into an area, take out every last natural resource that it
offers in order to build more human-habitat, then we repeat that process
again and again.
What other creature on earth intentionally destroys it's own habitat?
"Growing communities" by way of destroying our precious resources must
cease."
Michael Fearon

Don River Watershed Plan
Meetings and Events
Reports and Presentations - Coming Soon
--> The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, in consultation with the
multi-stakeholder Don Watershed Regeneration Council (DWRC) and watershed
municipalities, is developing a watershed plan for the Don River. This
watershed planning process has been initiated in response to a number of
recent policy and planning developments, including the Oak Ridges Moraine
Conservation Act 2001, and to update the original management strategy
outlined in Forty Steps to a New Don (1994). The full watershed plan will be
released in 2009 and will provide updated direction for the watershed, to
reflect the considerable activities that have been undertaken since Forty
Steps and the efforts of the DWRC and other organizations.
The objectives of the watershed planning study are to fill identified
information gaps, recommend updated management strategies that will guide
land and water use decisions, and provide direction for implementation of
priority regeneration actions. The study?s principles carry forward the
Forty Steps? approach to protect what is healthy, regenerate what is
degraded, and take responsibility for the Don.

Greetings,
Saturday, June 21, 10:00am:
A guided tour of the upgraded and expanded Lou Romano Water Treatment
Facility. The tour will be approximately 1.5 hours.
The Lou Romano plant is the largest facility of its type and largest water
discharger on the Canadian side of the Detroit River. Over $100 million has
recently been spent to expand its capacity and improve its ability to
protect source water. Come on out and see what the money was spent on and
what improvements have been made.
This event is free, but due to limited space please RSVP no later than
Thursday, June 19.
Tuesday, June 24, 7:00pm:
The Annual Weenie Award and Enviro Achiever Awards show. The Weenies are
our chance to recognize the person, corporation or agency that has achieved
new lows in their contribution to environmental degradation in our region.
Come out and boo, jeer and heckle your favourite Weenie to victory!
The Enviro-Achiever Awards are a way to celebrate positive contributions
made by people and organizations in our communities.
The Awards show is being held at the Rock Bottom Bar & Grill, 3236 Sandwich
St., Windsor.
Nominations for Weenies and Enviro-Achievers must be submitted in writing no
later than Wednesday, June 18.
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

Subject: Time is Running Out - Speak Now to Stop Sprawl in Kingston
Kingston's proposed Urban Boundary expansion puts Significant Woodlands at
risk to development, and opens the door to sprawl. Developers lobbied to
extend the boundary despite population studies showing there is no need.
Citizens must oppose the urban boundary expansion or risk the forests being
paved over for development in the near future.
Areas at risk include woodlands in Mile Square Block near Collins Creek, the
St. Lawrence Community, and an area North of the 401 near Division Street.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT. The deadline for public input
on Kingston's Official Plan is June 13, 2008. Write a letter to the city and
your local councillor. Tell them you oppose the urban boundary expansion and
want to see significant woodlands protected to maintain biodiversity and for
the sake of future generations.
For more information and for a SAMPLE LETTER to send to city hall see:

The sample letter is also attached to this email as a word document.
Please forward this to friends, family and colleagues. Thank you.
