GTA Locavores* UnConference
The Toronto Food Policy Council and Montgomery's Inn are hosting this social evening for all those food activists, policy wonks, farmers, academics and foodies who are conferenced-out. Here's your chance to come and enjoy an evening with no workshops, no plenaries. Just good, simple, seasonal food and drink, a fire in the fireplace, and congenial company.
Do we know how to do this? Come and find out! It may take some practice.
Time, place and registration
Friday, April 4, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Montgomery's Inn in Etobicoke (south-west corner at Dundas and Islington)
There's lots of parking. If you take the subway, get off at Islington and walk north to Dundas, or hop on the #37 (Islington North) bus and get off at Dundas.
Cash charge: $10 cover charge that includes all-you-can-eat brown beans cooked over the open hearth (two types - one for vegetarian, one for carnivores), fresh baked bread (with Red Fife flour, compliments of Riverdale Farm), cabbage salad, tea, coffee, cider, Inn-made maple syrup ice cream, and likely other things depending on what you all bring.
Alternative fee: A donation of food of at least equivalent value (a casserole, some home-baked goodies, some samples of your wares if you're a producer or processor; keep it local and/or seasonal and/or preserved, and please let us know in advance what you're bringing by contacting Janice Etter at gtalocavores at gmail.com or 416-233-1786)
Space is limited to 150 people so pre-registration is required and will be handled on a first come, first served basis. Email gtalocavores at gmail.com to have your name (and organizational affiliation, if you have one) added to the list. Please include a phone number as well. Payment will be accepted in cash at the door.
Volunteers and donations
We're keeping the cost down by hoping that people will pitch in and help with the cleaning up and dishes.
If you're a producer or processor, or a home cook or baker who likes to share your wares, please bring some along and we'll either add them to the meal or let you put them out for display and/or sampling.
There will be a place for brochures and handouts too.
Questions or suggestions?
Email Janice at gtalocavores at gmail.com, or if really urgent, call her at 416-233-1786.
A second email will be sent to registrants closer to the event.
*What's a locavore?
The word locavore was purportedly coined in 2005 in San Francisco, and was the 2007 New Oxford American Dictionary word of the year. Unfortunately, the dictionary did not provide a definition. In general, a locavore is considered to be someone who endeavours to eat foods sourced exclusively (or at least primarily) from their local foodshed or a determined radius from their home (commonly either 100 or 250 miles, depending on location). By eating locally, locavores hope to create a greater connection between themselves and their food sources, resist industrialized and processed foods, and support their local economy. Many locavores give themselves several exceptions to their local diet. Commonly excluded items include coffee, chocolate, salt, and/or spices - although locavores tend to try and find local coffee roasters, chocolate producers, and spice importers when they can.
