INFORMATION FOR 'EARTH HOUR AT THE OBSERVATORY' SATURDAY, MARCH 29TH, 2008,
7PM - 9:30PM*:
There is a $5 per person entrance fee for either Dr. Tom Bolton's 7pm (and 9pm if necessary) 'Light Pollution - How Richmond Hill Tamed the Lightbulb' lecture and Tuba Koktay's tour of the Administration Building.
It is strongly recommended that you preregister for the 7pm lecture or tour. There will be a sign-up sheet at the front reception desk of the Admin Building for the 9pm repeat lecture -
it will also be necessary to have your name on that sign-up sheet in order for you to attend this second lecture. There will be NO second tour available at 9pm.
Use the form at www.astro.utoronto.ca/DDO/public/tourschedule_scouts.html and submit it,
By fax: sent to (905) 884-2672, directed to "attention: DDO tours"
By e-mail: ...type the mandatory info into the body of a regular e-mail (i.e.- DON'T use "copy-and-paste") ; then send the e-mail to tours at astro.utoronto.ca
By phone: (905) 884-9562 x232. Note that the DDO is severely understaffed and therefore we can be slow to respond to phone messages.
Or by sending us the following webform directly from your Web browser...
(...works only if your browser is properly configured for sending out e-mail.) Complete and press the "submit" button just once. Your e-mail program may open and show you what you are about to send to us... this is normal. You will not see any immediate confirmation that we've received your e-mail; but you should hear back from us via e-mail or phone *within a few days* if the application was successfully sent.
If you don't register you may not be able to be included in the 7pm lecture and tour as space is limited, so they have to be dealt with on a first
come, first served basis - to be assured a spot and that you are not disappointed, please ensure you pre-register at the link above as soon as possible.
*PLEASE NOTE: Only those who are attending either a lecture or tour will be allowed inside the Administration Building.
For reasons of SAFETY AND SECURITY we cannot have 'Earth Hour' guests walking around inside the Administration Building unaccompanied. We thank you in advance for your understanding and co-operation.
All other 'Earth Hour at the Observatory' events will be taking place OUTSIDE on the front lawns, including telescope viewing, sky tours and the Aboriginal Ceremony led by David Grey Eagle.
THERE IS NO ADMISSION FEE TO THE GROUNDS AND FOR OUR MAIN EVENT which will begin at 8pm to coincide with the start of Global Earth Hour.
Telescopes will be set up during the 7 and 8pm hour and viewing through those will be on a continuous basis as soon as darkness falls and until our evening comes to a close.
There will also be a complimentary refreshment table outside for all, and a variety a DDO Defenders/Richmond Hill Naturalists items that will be available as well.
Parking on the grounds is limited, we can fit about 80 cars in the on-site parking lot, plus we will have press vehicles parked there as well. Expect the parking lot to fill up quickly.
If the lot is full you will be directed to park either in the Montessori parking lot directly across the gate or on Hillsview itself.
There is NO PARKING allowed on the OBSERVATORY DRIVEWAY.
The walk up the driveway to the front lawns will take you about 5-10 minutes.
Watch for updates during the next two weeks . 'Earth Hour at the Observatory' promises to be a most memorable and heartwarming event - a very fitting gathering and tribute for our beloved Observatory and Parkland!
The Owl poster above, and the Dome poster you received previously are posted on the Global Earth Hour Website:

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the 29th!
Best regards,
Karen - on behalf of your DDO Defenders Steering Committee.
P.S. Don't forget to dress warmly. It gets chilly standing outside while viewing the night sky.
