Saturday May 24, 2008, will mark the official start of the restoration of forest, wetland and wildland areas within the 500 acres of provincially-owned lands which Premier McGuinty dedicated to the memory of Bob Hunter in 2006.
Bob Hunter Memorial Park is a special part of Rouge Park dedicated to an outstanding Canadian. Bob Hunter helped co‑found GreenPeace in 1971. He was a daring Eco warrior and an award winning author, newspaper columnist and reporter for Citytv.
Rouge Park is developing a Bob Hunter Memorial Park Plan to protect and restore its natural beauty and provide low impact public access and enjoyment. On May 24, 2008, two hundred Toyota Canada volunteers will team-up with Friends of the Rouge Watershed to plant 300 native trees and 1200 native wildflowers to help expand the environmentally significant Box Grove Forest in Bob Hunter Memorial Park by some 25,000 square metres.
Over the last decade, with the help of many federal, provincial, municipal, corporate, school and community partners, FRW has helped mother nature to restore more than 1.3 million square metres of Rouge Park to forests, wetlands and wildflower meadows by involving more than 30,000 volunteers in the planting of more than 300,000 native trees, shrubs and flowers.
