Dirt, mud too much for Stouffville councilors
By: Jim Mason
Have you had it up to here with the mud, dust and other dirty offshoots of
Stouffville's building boom?
Rob Hargrave feels your pain and your dirt.
The councillor and long-time south Stouffville resident told town council
Tuesday builders must be held accountable for the mess.
"We are in the midst of what some people call progress," he said. "I've
lived in dirt and upheaval for four years.
(The builders) had better start completing some of their projects before
being considered for new ones, he added. Council was considering granting
Lebovic Enterprises Ltd. permission to build 175 homes, part of a 1,444-home
subdivision, between the Ninth Line and the GO train tracks north of 19th
Avenue.
Council eventually went against a staff recommendation to grant approval,
instead deferring the decision by two weeks when it will review a staff
report on developer deficiencies in the community.
"I see their lackluster efforts," Mr. Hargrave said. "I live in the
epi-centre (of new-home construction)."
"I want to put developers and builders on notice."
Councillor Suzanne Hilton, whose north Stouffville ward also includes
subdivisions under construction, agreed.
"I want us to make a statement and tell the developers they must stick to
their schedules," she said.
Some developers were making an effort to complete projects and clean up
their mess, Mayor Wayne Emmerson said.
He also had a problem was with some new-home buyers.
Earlier in the meeting, Mr. Emmerson took issue with buyers not
investigating their new neighbourhoods before purchasing, and some sales
agents.
"Everyone should look where they are buying a home," he said. "It could be
(next to) a railway track or a major roadway.
"And some salespeople don't always give out the right information."
He called it his "rant for the day".
