Welcome to a special 50th anniversary edition of the Conservation Council's
e-newsletter.
If you're receiving this newsletter for the first time, it's because we're
using the 50th anniversary as an opportunity to spread the word about the
Council to environmental volunteers and professionals across the province.
"Green On." is a one-way listserve, and we will send out 12 issues a year
at most (so we won't tax your in-box patience). If you want to
unsubscribe, you can do so on our home page, http://www.greenontario.org.
The Conservation Council of Ontario is a charitable association of major
provincial organizations and environmental leaders. Our goal is to promote
leadership, cooperation and action in support of a healthy
environment. The Green Ontario website, http://www.greenontario.org helps
us keep track of who's who, and who's doing what for the environment in
Ontario. Please send any suggestions for additions to cco at web.ca.

To our friends:
Please help us celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Conservation Council
of Ontario at the Kortright Centre on June 8th. Yes, we're planning a gala
dinner in November, but we also wanted to hold a peaceful, relaxing event,
with a forward thinking panel discussion in morning, followed by lunch and
a tour of the Kortright Centre.
If you've worked with the Council, want to find our more about us, or just
want to have a relaxing day out of the city, please join us. Details are
in the newsletter, or you can view a pdf file at
http://www.greenontario.org/cco/meetings2.html
NOTE: Please confirm your attendance by e-mail to cco at web.ca by Monday
June 3 so we can give the Kortright Centre an attendance estimate.
News
Walkerton Phase II Report is Released
http://www.walkertoninquiry.com/index.html
Justice O'Connor's report on how the government can prevent future
Walkerton tragedies was released last week. It contains 93 recommendations
under the main categories of
< Protecting the Source
< Provincial Oversight
< Municipal Responsibility
< Standards and Technology
< Special Cases -- small scale facilities and First Nations
The initial response to the report has been positive, with the government
supporting the recommendation for a Safe Drinking Water Act.
There are many recommendations that will have significant implications for
other current initiatives within the government, most notably, the five
year review of the Provincial Policy Statement, Superbuild, Smart Growth,
ministry business plans, and, of course, the budget.
We will be watching closely to see how Justice O'Connor's recommendations
are reflected in the government's actions over the next few months.
The Five Year Review of the Provincial Planning Policy Statement
The report on the consultation process around the Provincial Policy
Statement has been published and is available on the Ministry of Municipal
Affairs and Housing's PPS Review website:
http://www.mah.gov.on.ca/ppsreview/index-e.asp
We've noted highlights of the report, which summarizes what the government
heard in over 200 submissions, eight regional workshops and six open
houses. In particular, there were strong statements of support for:
< the provincial role and responsibility in providing leadership
< environmental protection
< the protection of significant farmlands
June 26 CCO Meeting on Ministry Business Plans
In recent years, the Conservation Council has prepared a detailed
submission on the business plans for those ministries subject to the
Environmental Bill of Rights. The Missing Values series can be found on
our Publications page.
This year, the Council would like to provide more opportunities for groups
and the public to contribute to our review. The June 26 meeting will help
us develop a public consultation plan.
Details on the location will be posted on the CCO meetings page within the
week http://www.greenontario.org/cco/meetings2.html
