BACKGROUND-IMAGE: url(res://ietag.dll/#34/#1001); BACKGROUND-REPEAT: repeat-x" tabIndex="0" w:st="on">Ontario</st1:State></st1:place>’s Conservation Movement<o:p></o:p> To subscribe or unsubscribe to this listserve, go to <a href="http://www.weconserve.ca/" title="http://www.weconserve.ca/">www.weconserve.ca</a><o:p></o:p> This posting is online at <a href="http://weconserve.ca/articles/?p=18">http://weconserve.ca/articles/?p=18</a> <o:p></o:p> <h2><o:p> </o:p></h2> <h2>Ontario’s Second Conservation Summit<o:p></o:p></h2> Tuesday May 30, 2006 The Royal <st1:City w:st="on">York</st1:City> Hotel, <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Toronto</st1:place></st1:City>  <a href="http://www.weconserve.ca/summit/">www.weconserve.ca/summit/</a><o:p></o:p> It was the first conservation summit in November 2004 that gave us the mandate for We Conserve.  Now, a year and a half later, it’s time to take stock.<o:p></o:p> On the positive side, we’ve made significant progress and we can begin to point to some innovative and successful programs.  Capitalizing on the need for electricity conservation, there are some great initiatives on the ground now, including <a href="http://www.reducethejuice.ca" target="_blank">Reduce the Juice</a>, <a href="http://www.onechange.org" target="_blank">Project Porchlight</a> and the <a href="http://www.weconserve.ca/doorsclosed.html" target="_blank">Doors Closed</a> campaign.  And we the Conservation Bureau is beginning to roll out incentives and other programs, like the <a href="http://www.everykilowattcounts.ca" target="_blank">Every Kilowatt Counts</a> program and rebate coupons.<o:p></o:p> But have we made enough progress?<o:p></o:p> The Ministry of Energy has provided the Conservation Bureau with directives for 1,300 MW of conservation, which it prices as a $1.3 billion commitment to conservation.  However, there is no clear plan for how <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ontario</st1:place></st1:State> will achieve a “culture of conservation”.  We have a number of programs, but no integrated multi-sector strategy to engage Ontarians, provide tailored advice, and to support individuals, businesses and municipalities in implementing conservation solutions. <o:p></o:p> And what about other issues?  Are we any further ahead in promoting compact livable communities, transportation alternatives, pollution prevention, waste reduction, local organic agriculture, and biodiversity?  A true “culture of conservation” applies a common social value to a wide range of issues;
