An update on the dangers of PVC, and on possibilities for Clean
Production and Green Development

Thursday, March 6, 7-10 pm
OISE Auditorium, 252 Bloor St. W.
free admission
Action
Rich Whate, Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA)
Nick DeCarlo, Canadian Auto Workers (CAW)
Dorothy Golden-Rosenberg, Women's Healthy Environments Network
(WHEN)

At the core of industrial-capitalist brown industry is petrochemical
industry based in organochlorines. The single most destructive
chemical of this destructive complex is polyvinyl choride (PVC), or
"vinyl". Called the "Watergate of chemicals", PVC
causes great damage to the environment and human health at every stage
of its life cycle. Although this material is now found everywhere in
the modern economy---flooring, siding, automobiles, children's
toys---the industry has grown by taking over existing markets
previously served by safer materials. Its market dominance has
depended on its dirt-cheap market price, but its real costs have taken
a massive toll on people and the environment. A growing movement
worldwide is calling for its phase- out in favour of clean production
and new benign materials.

The evening will not only serve as an introduction to the PVC issue
and the role of chlorine in the petrochemical industry, but provide an
overview of "the next industrial revolution" of green
manufacturing based in closed-loop industrial ecosystems, benign
materials and human- centred development.

Featured speaker of the evening is Beverley Thorpe, founder of Clean
Production Action, formerly toxics coordinator for Greenpeace
International in Europe. She is the author of the Citizen's Guide to
Clean Production.

Beverley will be joined by local experts: Rich Whate, toxics
campaigner for TEA; Nick DeCarlo, CAW environment specialist; and
Dorothy Golden-Rosenberg, of Women's Healthy Environments Network.
Other groups involved with community health, the environment, clean
production and workplace health and safety will also be on hand.

The event inaugurates a month of educational activities leading up to
the Canadian media premier of the award- winning documentary Blue
Vinyl: A Toxic Comedy, on CBC Newsworld's The Passionate Eye, Sunday
March 30.

The March 6 event is co-sponsored by Labour Council Environmental
Forum, the Ontario Workers Health & Safety Centre, Ontario
Federation of Labour (OFL), Women's Healthy Environments Network
(WHEN), Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA), the Coalition for a
Green Economy, the Labour and Waste Caucuses of the Ontario
Environment Network, Clean Production Action, Great Lakes United,
Grassroots Environmental Products, and the OISE/UT Transformative
Learning Centre.
