Dirty battle over sludge continues
Posted 8/22/06
BAKERSFIELD - It could be the defining court battle over the future of biosolids in the valley.
Kern County Supervisors said this morning they will seek support from other rural counties in the defense of Kern's voter-approved ban on the spreading of sewage sludge on local farmland.
Last week, the City of Los Angeles hired two law firms to overturn similar Kern's ban. The southland sanitation districts are challenging Measure E, the ballot measure that outlaws the spreading of sludge in Kern County.
Fifth District Supervisor, Michael Rubio said, "They have heavily invested in this lawsuit and have joined together, the City of Los Angeles, L.A County and Orange County."
"It has the makings for the Super Bowl of all battles regarding land application of bio-solids," he adds.
County supervisors next week will formally request financial and/or legal assistance in the lawsuit from other counties in California that have full or partial bans on the spreading of sewage sludge.
