BAKERSFIELD - A massive sewage sludge composting facility is ready for
business near Taft.
Synagro’s South Kern Compost manufacturing plant is ramping up to start
receiving biosolids from southland sanitation districts.

At full capacity, the facility will compost up to 400,000 tons of sludge
annually, along with another 270,000 tons of green waste, most of it from
agriculture, and could result in additional sludge imports from the
southland.

Synagro officials said the plant is state-of-the-art, using the newest
technologies to reduce harmful emissions and protect groundwater.

The project was met with considerable opposition in 2005, mostly from
lawmakers and water officials who have taken a hard-line against the
importation of treated sewage sludge from the southland.

But by the time opposition was organized, Synagro already had its permits in
hand, making it difficult to derail the project.
