A US federal interagency study, completed in 2004, evaluates the
significance of levels of radioactive materials detected in municipal sewage sludge.
The study was based on sludge samples taken at over 300 POTW's where elevated
levels of radioactive materials were expected. Dose modeling, based on
typical sludge management practices, was performed to provide perspective to the
levels of specific radionuclides detected in the survey. A guidance document
was prepared to provide a methodology to POTW operators and environmental
regulators for evaluating levels of radioactive materials detected in sludges
produced at a specific POTW.

The three documents (survey, dose modeling, and guidance), as well as a
database containing the survey results, can be accessed at _www.iscors.org_
(http://www.iscors.org) .
