Towns that restrict sludge spreading charged more for disposal
July 14, 2006
FRANKLIN, N.H. --About 50 New Hampshire communities that restrict spreading
treated sewage on fields are being charged more to dispose of it at a
regional treatment plant.
Starting next month, the communities will be paying a 50 percent surcharge
to have their wastewater treated at the Winnipesaukee River Basin Program
plant in Franklin. The plan serves ten Lakes Region communities and accepts
septage from about 90 other communities around the state. The program says
the increase is to cover the higher cost it must pay to dispose of treated
material, called sludge.
Spreading sludge on fields as fertilizer has been controversial in some
communities, where opponents say it is a health hazard.
