A few years ago an Ontario waste hauler, Harvey (Skip) Ambrose (Ontario
Disposal, Courtice Auto Wreckers) was no longer allowed to put Atlantic
Packaging sludge on Ontario farmland under a provincial waste permit
(Certificate of Approval). Why ? The sludge damaged any crop that required
nitrogen.
So he put it on with no permit anyway. He claimed he was making a 'product'
by mixing in a little compost. But since he gives it away it is not managed
by the Federal Fertilizer Act which requires that material be sold.
He also started throwing up 20 or 30 foot high 'berms' and mountains of
sludge, claiming they were for sound control. This is a putrescing waste
with high levels of total petroleum hydrocarbons, neurotoxins, Ecoli and
endocrine disruptors. The site specific risk assessment done on the berm in
Oshawa has not been released to the public despite years of asking for it.
A year and half ago the Expert Panel of scientists and physicians convened
by the Ontario Gov't to advise them reported that the material needs to be
managed as a waste. The Province continues to sit on its hands while trucks
bring tractor trailor loads from Atlantic Packaging in Scarboro and Whitby
and from Abitibi Thorold out to rural lands and tip it into mountains for
cheap disposal on farm fields and rural lands.
Despairing neighbors, keen to protect the environment and groundwater, are
convening for a picket action this morning.
Sound-Sorb Protest
Pelham, Ontario
Monday June 12/06
A Safe and Peaceful protest is being planned for Monday June 12/2006 near
Vineland (St. Catherines area) to express concerns of the building of a
Sound-Sorb berm.
The Ministry of the Environment has not acted on recommendations set by an
Expert Panel in January 2005. Public concerns have been raised across the
province.
Farms have been told its safe and good for there crop yet The MOE has a
report that there are no benefits to the crop with the exception of Soya
beans, and the risk to the enviroment out way the benefit, a legal loop hole
permits the culprits to dump this stuff on land with NO PERMISSION or
permits from local municipalities.
Gone are the times of waiting for government to act on this issue its time
for you and I to take a firm stand on protecting our environment and make
the people who produce this waste step up and clean up rather then you and I
The rally will be starting at approx 7:30am at 325 Church Street, in Pelham.
Go up Regional Road 24 turn left on Webber road church is first on left
Several radio and TV stations have been alerted. Please help to spread the
word.
They will be stopping the trucks for 10 min at a time in and out of the
pickit entrance. The police will likely close off traffic to the street
except for trucks.
Hopefully, this will get some action from the government.
Wish them luck!
