 Sludgewatch Admin:

Here is a sewage lagoon that hasn't been dredged for 25 years...and the plan is to do land application of the sludge. The heavy metals and other contaminants could be pretty high

after all this time. Who knows what industries discharged into that lagoon through those years. The decomposition of the organic matter while the metals remain...that means

there could be very high metals in this material. Since it isn't that far from radioactive Port Hope, the public may want the town to test for radioactivity as well.

Township to dredge sewage lagoon

The Colborne sewage lagoon will have the biosolids removed this year. The lagoon hasn't been dredged since 1982

Cramahe Township council agreed to the pumping of about 30,000 cubic litres at $10.75 per litre at its regular meeting on June 20. The total bill will be $322,000, if estimates are accurate. The price is within the amount budgetted by the township for the work.

Council received three bids for the work at its June 6 meeting. Triland's was the lowest. Lissom Earth Services was next at $17.38 per cubic litre.

When asked about the wide difference in bids, public works director Barry Thrasher said it might be because Triland is already working in this area and has fields nearby approved for spreading the material.

At the June 6 meeting, township resident John Rutherford suggested another option which did not require trucking and provided a substantial saving.

The matter was deferred on that date so Mr. Thrasher could find out if the waste could be temporarily stored on site.

The Ministry of the Environment advised Mr. Thrasher the township does not have the permits to store the material on site and therefore could not avail itself of the Rutherford idea.

Work will be done over a three-week period in the fall.
