New life for deadstock plant

The introduction of new technology to an old rendering plant here holds 
promise for a sustainable deadstock disposal system that could supply 
surplus energy to Ontario's electrical power grid.
With that in view, Ontario Minister of Agriculture Leona Dombrowsky 
yesterday announced a $1.7-million grant to support Atwood Pet Food Supply 
Ltd. in its efforts to turn around a business that took a big hit when 
bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE) concerns forced a ban on the use of 
bonemeal in most livestock food.
The province's support for the company, said Ms. Dombrowsky, demonstrates 
the government is moving forward on sustainable, long-term solutions to how 
deadstock products are managed.
The minister credited company president Dave Smith and his son and general 
manager Tom Smith for "taking a risk" with the plant conversion and said the 
contribution from the government recognizes it has a role to play in 
innovation.
