The introduction of new technology to an old rendering plant here holds
promise for a sustainable deadstock disposal system that could supply
surplus energy to Ontario's electrical power grid.
With that in view, Ontario Minister of Agriculture Leona Dombrowsky
yesterday announced a $1.7-million grant to support Atwood Pet Food Supply
Ltd. in its efforts to turn around a business that took a big hit when
bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE) concerns forced a ban on the use of
bonemeal in most livestock food.
The province's support for the company, said Ms. Dombrowsky, demonstrates
the government is moving forward on sustainable, long-term solutions to how
deadstock products are managed.
The minister credited company president Dave Smith and his son and general
manager Tom Smith for "taking a risk" with the plant conversion and said the
contribution from the government recognizes it has a role to play in
innovation.
