Sludgewatch Admin:

Looks like the farmer boycott of sewage sludge spreading is effective. Below
is the preparation for an emergency order from the Ontario Ministry of the
Environment to allow for the incineration of the sewage sludge from Statford
Ontario,...sludge that farmers refuse to take for land application.

Farmers are concerned about the environmental impacts of spreading sewage
sludge (this is tile drained land and a rain will bring extensive runoff
into the Thames River). They are also trying to bring attention to the farm
plight...low prices and escalating costs of products, closed borders to
trade with the US, and BSE. Boycotting urban sludges is one way to get
urban attention.

TOURISM ON CITY COUNCIL AGENDA

BY BEACON HERALD STAFF

Among items on city council's agenda Monday is consideration of establishing
a tourism transition board composed of a representative group of industry
volunteers to undertake the planning and managing of the transition from
Tourism Stratford to a Stratford Tourism Corporation.

Council will also consider a request for an emergency order from the
Ministry of the Environment, in the event delivery and incineration of
Stratford biosolids at the City of London treatment facility is required.

Downtown awnings are back on the agenda and council will, among other
things, look at endorsing a subcommittee move to marginally reduce city
taxes as a result of unforeseen provincial funding.
The council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
