Sludgewatch Admin:

Wild animals in captivity already have it rough....they are held prisoner
for the amusement of human families.
To feed them on hay that has been grown in soil ammended by our urban
pollutants seems additionally cruel.

There were cattle deaths associated with eating sludge ammended cattle feed
in Augusta Georgia...and a successful
lawsuit was brought by the farmer.

This plan to feed zoo animals on sludge hay is risky and cruel and should
be stopped.

City providing hay, grown in biosolids, to zoo

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.

Hay for the zoo is being grown at the Chattanooga wastewater treatment
plant.

City solid waste resources director Jerry Stewart says the city is now using
solids, left over after wastewater has been treated, as fertilizer. The
plant has about 90-thousand tons of it a year.
It's applied to 15 acres of land near the plant in a demonstration project.
The "biosolids" add nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to the soil.
Stewart says the hay will be cut this weekend and baled next week.
It will be sent to the zoo to be used for animals such as camels.
