Sludgewatch Admin:

Hard to believe...but just when many cities are looking to stop the land
application of sewage sludge as too stinky, too filthy, too open to
litigation costs, too polluting of ground water - crops- surface
water...here the Nashville plant wants to START smearing industrially
contaminated fecal filth on fields.

Trick or Treat ? Let me think...
Trick!

Environmental Activists Protest Metro Plans to Recycle Sewer Sludge as
Fertilizer

Nashville, TN: There is a new Metro Water & Sewer facility under
construction and due to open in fall of 2007, and it is moving in the
direction of recycling sludge as fertilizer to be applied on grazing land,
cropland and orchards. Bruce Wood, an environmental activist, with Bring
Urban Recycling to Nashville Today warns, "Do not be tricked into believing
this is a treat. Citizens must educate themselves on this issue and demand
that city leaders not allow this to happen." Members of BURNT, the Green
Party and concerned citizens will gather on Tuesday October 31, 2006 at 3
p.m. at the Sewage Treatment Facility, Metro Water Department at 1600 2nd
Avenue North (37208) and Cement Plant Road to protest with the theme 'No
More "Tricks" That Sewer Sludge Is a "Treat"'
It is a frightening fact that Nashville is moving in the direction of
recycling sludge into fertilizer. Unfortunately, this fertilizer contains
heavy metals and other nasty surprises that could end up on your dinner
plate. This is why Halloween is a perfect day to protest, learn about the
risks and the alternatives.

In a November, 1990 edition of U.S. Federal Register, the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) said this about sewer sludge, "typically, these
constituents may include volatiles, organic solids, nutrients,
disease-causing pathogenic organisms (bacteria, virus, etc.), heavy metals
and inorganic ions, and toxic organic chemicals from industrial wastes,
household chemicals and pesticides.'

Quoting from Wendy Priesnitz award winning article, 'The Real Dirt on Sewage
Sludge' 'In fact there are thousands of substances that can be found in
typical sewage sludge, including any of the 100,000 or so chemicals produced
and used in industrialized nations, many of which illegally end up in
sewers. Anything dumped into the sewers and removed by treatment becomes
sludge.'
