Conman's Scandalous Behaviour
Aug 31, 2006
Cambridge News UK
ACTION is being taken to stop the smell of sewage wafting around Royston.
Residents have been complaining about unpleasant odours hanging over the
town and surrounding areas for months.
At a meeting of the Royston and district committee of North Hertfordshire
District Council, water treatment companies said they were doing everything
they could to stop the stench.
Anglian Water said the unsavoury smells were believed to be coming from a
variety of sources.
These included paper pulp being spread on fields around the town, the
spreading of sludge, and odours from the Anglian Water sewage treatments
works.
A resident said: "This has been going on for long enough. It's extremely
unpleasant, especially early in the morning and in the evenings."
Dan Baker, a spokesman for Anglian Water, said: "We have removed all odorous
sludge from our sites - we are not stockpiling anything on our site anymore.
"We had been considering investing in a sludge reception centre where the
treated product comes to, but we are now deferring a decision on that for
six months when we will assess it again.
"We are doing everything we can."
At the meeting, presentations were given by Stephen Boulton, Paul Tovell,
and Alan Duncan from Anglian Water, Henry Grace from Terra Eco Systems, and
Coun Sarah Wren, portfolio holder for housing and environmental health.
Coun Fiona Hill, district councillor for Royston Heath ward, described the
meeting as "encouraging".
Residents should contact environmental health officers at the council to
report any problems on (01462) 474328.
