Neenah Paper boosts renewable energy purchases
The Business Journal of Milwaukee - 4:20 PM CDT Wednesday
Neenah Paper Inc. said Wednesday that it is buying 12 percent of the energy
needs for its fine paper mills in Wisconsin from renewable energy sources.
Neenah Paper, an Alpharetta, Ga., paper company -- which operates paper
mills in Neenah and Whiting -- said it will buy more than 10 million
kilowatt-hours of energy from renewable sources of energy such as wind,
solar, low-impact hydro and biomass.
Neenah Paper (NYSE: NP) is purchasing the power through Milwaukee-based We
Energies' Energy for Tomorrow program, one of only nine utility renewable
energy programs certified by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions,
San Francisco. The purchase qualifies Neenah Paper for distinguished
membership in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power
Partnership, a program recognizing organizations for exemplary green power
purchases.
The purchase follows a January 2006 announcement that the company would
purchase 350 million pounds of "green steam" annually to dry paper during
manufacturing and also to heat the mill in Neenah. The steam was declared
"green" by the State of Wisconsin because it is derived from a renewable,
organic source: wastewater sludge from paper mills.
The purchase reduces both Neenah Paper's natural gas consumption and carbon
dioxide emissions into the atmosphere by 80 percent every year.
