Rappahannock News, Virginia
*Sewage sludge is nasty, toxic stuff that pollutes land, water, and air, and
is suspected of having devastating human health consequences, to say the
least. Its use here will reduce land values, increase taxes, and make this
county a less desirable place to live.
*As a candidate for the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors for
Piedmont District, I am asking the County government to take a stronger
position against the proposed application of sewage sludge in the county.
*I refer you to other sections of the Rappahannock News and to Rappnet for
coverage and discussion of the action taken by the board at its last meeting
on Sept 6 on the subject of Sludge application.
*Should we rely on the VA dept of Health to monitor compliance? A recent
legislative study on the VA Biolsolids program resulted in a scathing review
of everything that is not being done regarding program oversight by the VA
Dep't of Health (VDH) or anyone else. No one is checking, so nobody knows if
the land application of treated sewage is operating safely or not.

*Our ordinance banning sewage sludge from the county (sections Zoning
170-38-A7 and Health 111-1) adopted in 1994 should have been repealed and
replaced with a strong regulating/monitoring ordinance.
*Our Board of supervisors developed a draft ordinance in 2002" an ordinance
providing for monitoring the storage and land application of sewage sludge".
The draft document was shelved. It is time to put it back on the table,
review and PASS IT.
*A public hearing is scheduled for October 2 on the subject. It is essential
that concerned citizens attend
Sincerely and respectfully,
Monira Rifaat for County Supervisor
Sperryville
