BAKERSFIELD - A proposal to place tougher regulations on a Kern County
landfill was the subject of a public hearing in Bakersfield Friday morning.
For about 10 years the HM Holloway mine near Lost Hills has been disposing
of solid waste in huge open pits left over from the mining of gypsum.
The waste includes asphalt shingles, shredded tires, and fly ash.
Holloway has applied for a permit to accept treated sewage sludge.
The landfill is currently exempt from needing a solid waste disposal permit,
but county officials said it may need one now.
A Delano-based environmental group agrees.
Public testimony was given Friday about the permit proposal for Holloway's
landfill.
The company said it is diligently pursuing completion of an environmental
impact report to support the disposal of additional waste streams.
The county will issue a decision in about 30 days.
