Sludge
Rappahannock County residents will be able to boast, perhaps as early as
this summer, that they have a new ordinance aimed at limited or preventing
the use of sludge - human waste - as fertilizer on open farm land. As a
result of last year's fuss over a (later withdrawn) attempt to spread sludge
on one county farm, the supervisors have been looking at ways to halt or
restrict the practice.
Now, the board heard Wednesday, the legislative process is underway.
Administrator McCarthy reported that he and County Attorney Peter Luke have
been in meetings, and exchanging messages, with the Sludge Committee. "This
is", said McCarthy, "a very dedicated group." He added that he expects to
have a draft ordinance ready by the March meeting of the board. After that,
and a period of public hearings, the county would be ready to vote on a new
ordinance.
