Canada-wide Strategy for the Management
of Municipal Wastewater Effluents -
Coordinated Science and Research
Interactive Session at the 42 nd Central Canadian
Symposium on Water Quality Research
Tuesday, February 13th, 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
Canada Centre for Inland Waters, Burlington , Ontario
Co-presented by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment

Hear an overview of the proposed strategy and presentation of the Science
Report, and tell us:

What you would do if you were in charge?
What are the priorities for science research?
What are the priorities for engineering research?
How would you improve information dissemination?
How would you improve research coordination?

What is the draft CCME Municipal Effluent Strategy? What is the purpose of
the Interactive Session?

The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) have expressed
their support for the Canada-wide Strategy for managing municipal wastewater
effluent. Environment Ministers directed officials to consult with
interested parties on key elements of the CCME Strategy, recognizing that
full information on the costs and potential funding mechanisms will develop
in tandem. The CCME Strategy is intended to establish performance standards
so Canada's water bodies are protected, to harmonize regulatory requirements
across the country, and to propose sustainable funding mechanisms for its
implementation.

The CCME Strategy includes elements related to science and research since
currently in Canada, a significant amount of research is being conducted on
issues related to wastewater effluents. Unfortunately, because no one group
or organization is coordinating the overall research agenda, it is difficult
to keep track of who is researching what, what has already been done, and
what the key research priorities should be in the future. This situation has
led to uncertainty and duplication. For these reasons, it is imperative for
research and policy development to be coordinated and focus on:

Strengthening the links between wastewater effluents, health and environment
Reducing harmful pollutants in surface waters
Identifying and filling information gaps
Coordinating technology research and development
Addressing research needs in Canada's Arctic
Addressing emerging issues
Consultation sessions are currently taking place across Canada with a
purpose of presenting the options identified in the Canadian Council of
Ministers of the Environment (CCME) Strategy for information and discussion
with interested parties. An Interactive Session on the CCME Strategy at the
42nd Central Canadian Symposium on Water Quality Research will be an
opportunity for you to seek clarification, ask questions and to provide your
input on the Strategy options with a specific focus on the science and
research aspects. Once feedback has been received from stakeholders, all
comments will be considered and used to complete the development of the CCME
Strategy.
