BAKERSFIELD - From our dumping ground file, county supervisors voted
unanimously to spend another $400,000 in defense of the county’s sludge
alternative.
Measure E outlaws the spreading of treated sewage sludge on farmland in Kern
County.

The initiative was strongly supported by voters in June, but is currently be
challenged by the federal court by southland sludge generators.

The $400,000 transferred Tuesday will cover legal costs for the county
through the fiscal year which ends in June.

A federal judge in Los Angeles will hear motions from two organizers that
want to join Kern in its legal defense of Measure E.

The Kern County Water Agency and the Center for Race, Poverty, and the
Environment will go before Judge Gary Feese next month with motions to
intervene on the county’s behalf.
