UNION STATEMENT AGAINST MINERGY/SYNAGRO PROPOSAL

1. DETROITERS ARE OPPOSED TO THE LOSS OF KEY
INSTITUTIONS.
We take it as an attack on our Civil Rights if
Detroit¡¦s jewels are threatened.
We voted by a 2 to 1 margin to reinstate the election
of School Board Members.
Hundreds of citizens came to the Michigan Senate¡¦s
hearings when Republicans were trying to take over the
Water Department. The loss of Detroit General
Hospital, Recorders Court, and the Zoo are still
bemoaned. Any referendum or debate on privatization
would be easily won by city workers.

2. LOSING 140 DETROIT JOBS HURTS THE COMMUNITY.
City workers are the backbone of many neighborhoods.
Ninety two percent of local 207 members are
Detroiters. Is this a City Council that would support
the proposed permanent loss of jobs by shutting the
Sewage Plant¡¦s incinerators?

3. THE MINERGY PROPOSAL IS UNFAIR AND VERY OPEN ENDED.
„«	All natural gas, electricity, and wash water are
provided free to Minergy by DWSD.
„«	The proposal has a built in CPI increase every
year.
„«	DWSD ratepayers will have to pay additional
millions because the sludge dryness standard of 28% is
often unobtainable.
„«	The proposal is essentially a sludge hauling and
dumping contract, there is no assurance that Minergy
will be able to obtain air pollution permits for Fluid
Bed Incinerators. 

4. EVERTHING THAT MINERGY/SYNAGRO PROPOSES CAN BE DONE
CHEAPER AND IN PUBLIC¡¦S INTEREST BY THE UNIONIZED
CITY OF DETROIT WORKFORCE
