Limestone to seek injunction against use of human waste fertilizer

ATHENS - The Limestone County wants to go to court to attempt to stop the
spread of a fertilizer made from sewer sludge in New York from being spread
on county farms.
Limestone County Commission Chairman David Seibert asked the commission at a
work session this morning to give him the authority to file an injunction in
court to stop the practice, which came to light last week.
The commission voted unanimously to give Seibert permission to seek the
injunction pending approval by county attorney Mike Cole. Seibert said after
the meeting that he had talked to Cole about getting the commission's
permission for the court action, but it will probably be about a week before
Cole decides to approve the move.
Seibert said he would seek the injunction on the grounds that the fertilizer
could be a public health hazard.
Synagro Technologies Inc. of Houston, Texas, treats the sewer sludge from
New York at a plant in Leighton and turns it into fertilizer that is given
to state farmers.
At least two farms in Goodsprings in northwest Limestone County have been
using the fertilizer, which contains treated human waste, and others have
signed up for the program.
Neighbors of the two farms say that the fertilizer stinks more than regular
fertilizer.
A company spokeswoman said previously that the fertilizer is safe, and a
county employee sent to investigate said that the federal Environmental
Protection Agency doesn't consider it a health hazard.
