TORONTO - The McGuinty government is moving to further protect the =
health of Ontarians by asking the public to comment on the first part of =
comprehensive legislation aimed at protecting the sources of drinking =
water, Environment Minister Leona Dombrowsky announced today.
"Clean, safe water is essential in protecting our health," said =
Dombrowsky. "Now, we are taking another step closer to introducing =
legislation that will help protect water before it enters our drinking =
water systems."
As part of its strategy to protect Ontario's drinking water from source =
to tap, the government has released draft legislation on the development =
and approval of watershed-based source protection plans. Watershed-based =
source protection was a key recommendation of the Walkerton Inquiry.
The draft legislation is posted on the Environmental Bill of Rights =
Registry for a 60-day public comment period.
Today's announcement complements recent government actions to protect =
drinking water quality and safeguard the environment and human health, =
including increasing the number of water inspectors in the province by =
25 per cent; a one-year moratorium on new and expanded water-taking =
permits that remove water from watersheds; proposing strict new rules =
for water takings; and setting tough new training and certification =
requirements for water system operators.
Since taking office in October, the McGuinty government has implemented =
23 Walkerton Inquiry recommendations. This proposed legislation on =
source protection is the first step towards implementing an additional =
five of the recommendations.
"We are delivering on our promise to implement the O'Connor =
recommendations," Dombrowsky added. "Our actions will help protect =
Ontario's water resources, build strong and livable communities and keep =
Ontarians healthy."
