Sludge bill pulled from Committee
(KGET 2007)
Posted 1/30/08
BAKERSFIELD - A southland lawmaker has pulled a bill from the Legislature
that would have put Kern County at odds with the state over its biosolids
ban.
Earlier this month, Santa Clarita Assemblyman Cameron Smythe introduced a
bill backed by southland sludge generators that would have authorized
California's Integrated Waste Management Board to set statewide guidelines
for land application of treated sewage sludge.
The bill would have prohibited stricter regulations at the local level, and
probably would have nullified Kern County's voter-approved biosolids ban.
Smythe said he pulled the bill out of Committee last week after talks with
lawmakers from Kern County.
