Here we see a contrast between the poor practices in Southern Ontario and
world leading paper industry in Europe.

Environmentalists and outraged rural communities have been fighting dreary
battles with industry and the Province of Ontario regulators against
dioxin contaminated black liquor (spent pulping liquor) sprayed on rural
roads as a 'dust suppressant' (Dombind) and against mountains of deinking
paper sludge heaped on farmfields as Nitro-Sorb or Sound-Sorb.

These materials leach into groundwater and run contaminants into streams.
The paper sludge ink content contains levels of total petroleum hydrocarbons
a dozen times over the contaminated site cleanup guidelines. The
communities around these berms fear the berms gas off methyl ethyl ketone,
contain the neurotoxic acrylamide monomer from the sludge thickeners, and
release methane and other gases off into the atmosphere as they decompose.

The sludge also contains very high levels of intestinal tract bacteria
including Ecoli levels of 500,000 CFU / gram. There are concerns about the
movement of bacteria into groundwater and surface water. Sewage sludge was
used to initiate the digesters at Atlantic Packaging.

At Stora Enso these same residuals...sludge and spent pulping liquor... are
powering the plant, offsetting coal energy, sparing farm lands and landfills
from these industrial wastes, and protecting the environment by stopping
the release of greenhouse gases like methane from the sludge.

Kruger Paper in Quebec is on the same track as Stora Enso.

Stora Enso sets target for its CO2 emission reductions

03/19/2008....

The Finnish-Swedish forest industry giant Stora Enso has set a concrete goal
for its carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reductions. The emissions should be
cut by a fifth from 2006 levels by 2020.

Helsinki (16.03.2008 – Juhani Artto) The Finnish-Swedish forest industry
giant Stora Enso has set a concrete goal for its carbon dioxide (CO2)
emission reductions. The emissions should be cut by a fifth from 2006 levels
by 2020.

The comparable figures are expressed in CO2 emissions per saleable pulp,
paper and board tons. The figures cover both the emissions of Stora Enso’s
own operations and the emissions caused by the purchased electricity and
heat consumed in Stora Enso’s operations. The emissions of the company’s own
operations consist mainly of on-site energy generation and processes, power
boilers, lime kilns, paper drying, vehicles, engines and harvesting
equipment.

In 2007, Stora Enso’s direct and indirect CO2 emissions (carbon foot print)
made a total of 14,21 million tonnes. In December 2007 the company sold its
North American operations which will significantly reduce the total CO2
emissions in 2008.

Primarily, Stora Enso plans to achieve the reductions “through improvements
in energy efficiency and productivity, as well as the increased use of
carbon-neutral biomass and low-carbon fossil fuels”, the company states in
its annual report 2007.
The share of bioenergy in Stora Enso’s internal energy production was 66 per
cent in 2007. The major sources of bioenergy for Stora Enso are black
liquor, bark, logging residues and internal residuals including de-inking
sludge and bio-sludge. “We are continuously looking for opportunities to
increase the share of biomass in our fuel mix”, the company explains.
