Minnesota could become home to the first commercial cellulosic ethanol
plant. Mascoma, a company based in Boston, created an ethanol-making process
for the potential new facility that extracts carbon-5 sugars in paper
sludge.

Mascoma’s media relations told Brownfield the company is still in the
planning stage of choosing a site. Researchers from the University of
Minnesota have tested paper sludge samples from several mills throughout the
state to determine where to put the new facility. The facility is projected
to produce about 1.5 million gallons per year.

Mascoma has several biomass-to-ethanol projects in development, including a
switchgrass-based ethanol pilot project in Tennessee.
