Manager, Community & Educational Programmes

Situated on Toronto's waterfront, Harbourfront Centre is renowned as
Canada's foremost facility for
contemporary culture. Our year-round operation offers some 4000
internationally acclaimed events
ranging from music, literary and theatrical festivals to children's
activities and craft workshops.
Currently an employment opportunity exists in our Community and
Educational Programmes department
for a full time Manager, Community and Educational Programmes.

We seek an experienced manager with broad vision and a profound
understanding and passion for
developing diverse community arts; a strong leader and facilitator, able
to motivate and inspire a team of
creative programme staff enabling them to attain their goals of
programme excellence; and a strategic and
creative thinker with a keen curiosity and an eclectic and broad based
background in the arts.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this position is responsible
for developing innovative and
effective programming in the community arts, educational and
recreational areas which fulfill
Harbourfront Centre's overall programming mandate, as well as the day to
day management of the
department. This involves:

* Managing all aspects of the planning, development and implementation
of a diverse range of
public events that reflect the interests of a multicultural,
contemporary, urban family audience

* Managing and directing a staff of 16 full time employees and a large
number of seasonal staff
during the peak programme period in the Volunteer, Music, Community and
Special Events,
School by the Water, Camps and Recreational areas of the organization

* Developing annual operating overhead and programme budgets and
assuming fiscal
responsibility through monitoring and evaluating expenditures in
relation to budgets and
financial plans

* Developing contact with and responding to proposals from potential
community partners to
identify areas of mutual interest that can be transformed into
innovative and inspiring public
programmes

* Consulting with internal departments on all matters pertaining to the
implementation and
marketing of the community, educational and recreational programmes as
well as the efficient
operation of the department.

The ideal candidate will be a graduate of a post secondary programme in
a related discipline with 7 to 10
years' senior management experience in a not-for-profit cultural or
community based organization. She
or he will have superb interpersonal and relationship management skills
and an ability to develop
partnerships when dealing with diverse communities and managing a large
number of staff. Excellent
communication, organizational and project management skills are required
as well as strong financial
management and budgeting skills and a facility with contemporary
computer technology. Lastly, an
established network of contacts with cultural leaders and artists from
many divergent communities is a
must.
