BEHIND THE MASK

A Gestalt Training Program for Actors and Performing Artists

Jorge Rosner was the Executive Director of the Gestalt Institute of Toronto
from 1973 until his death in 1994. His experience in theatre included
acting and directing which contributed to his genius as a Gestalt therapist.
Rosner founded the Chicago theatre company called the Theatre of Being where
he taught his actors to translate their emotional truths into powerful
performance.

The Gestalt approach respectfully assists individuals to integrate the
various parts of themselves in order to become fully present and alive in
any given moment. Lightness and fun are essential ingredients in the
Gestalt approach to personal and professional exploration. Students of
Gestalt learn tools that empower them to live passionately and in awareness.

Actors often struggle with credibility. This program will enable actors and
performers to live their lives in the moment in order to get on with
business of living and performing more effectively. The Gestalt method is
experiential. Some themes for this training include: intimacy; acting from
your gut; sharing the spotlight; clowning and humour; spontaneity and
authenticity, getting in your own way and the nature of life as an actor.

This weekend workshop picks up where performance technique classes leave
off. Through the use of Gestalt techniques actors will have the opportunity
to identify and transform blocks to performance into confidence and focus.
Participants will include various aspects of themselves that may be
problematic and learn to utilize them in the acting process. Through
Gestalt therapy, the actor/performer will more easily enter a neutral and
grounded stance from which s/he can shift into any character. While
personality fragments are important seeds for developing character, it is
integration that is the performer's source of power and choice.

LEADER
JoAnne Greenham, Executive Director and Head of Faculty of the Gestalt
Institute of Toronto for seven years. She studied with Harvey Freedman and
Jorge Rosner. In her private practice of over twenty-five years, she has
worked with many members of Toronto's Arts community. JoAnne is a master of
the art of working in the moment. She skillfully changes the experience of
the individual so that they can proceed with the business of creative
living. JoAnne's Gestalt is funny, poignant and powerful. Her well known
work with art, dreams, and clowning for couples is reflective of the high
drama that Gestalt therapy becomes in her hands.

Comments from Actors working with Gestalt Therapy:

"Exploring Gestalt opened up a whole range of possibilities in my
acting and personal life..."

"Gestalt has taught me that integration is about reconciling opposites.
It keeps me committed to my truth while not allowing me to take myself too
seriously."
