AUDITION NOTICE

Ship's Company Theatre invites actors to submit resumes for consideration for Jacob's Wake, by Michael Cook, to be directed by R.H. Thomson in the summer of 2003.

The Play:
It's Easter weekend in a Newfoundland outport in the 1950s. The storm brewing outside mirrors the stormy relations inside the Blackburn house.

The Skipper, a former sealing schooner captain who lost his crew along with favourite son Jacob on the ice floes in 1919, is now bed and guilt ridden. He fades in and out of memory and reality, sanity and insanity. Below, his remaining children and grandchildren battle for a shred of dignity and peace in a world that has only taught them bitter lessons of personal survival. With no escape and nowhere but the family fold to vent their disappointments and disillusions, the Blackburns psychologically pick at one another's wounds as they grope toward some understanding of existence and humanity.

The house and household are as storm tossed as if they were at sea, which indeed they are. Only the death of the Skipper and the end of his lifelong wake for Jacob, can release the family from their seeming cursed existence.

The roles of Winston and Mary have been cast. The following roles are available:

Skipper: a feisty old schooner captain on his death-bed.
Rosie: Matriarch, enabler and caretaker of the family; late fifties.
Brad: Failed priest, guilt-ridden zealot; late twenties to late thirties.
Alonzo: Local tavern owner and purveyor of prostitutes; late twenties to early forties.
Wayne: The one that got away, a politician who cannot really escape his upbringing; late twenties to early forties.

Two copies of the play will be available for reading at the ACTRA office, 1660 Hollis Street, Suite 103, during regular business hours.

Auditions/readings will take place in Halifax on December 16th, 2002 at the Jest in Time Studio, Suite 206, 1585 Barrington Street.
