Shakespeare Globe Centre of Canada
International Artistic Residence for Professional Theatre Artists: The
Christopher Plummer Fellowship Award

Applications Being Accepted For Auditions

"This was one of the few experiences in my life that managed to be
everything I wanted and much more than I anticipated. Truly not to be
missed." Scott Lale, Graduate 2002

"The Globe was the first theatre I have performed in where I could
tangibly feel the often overused term ENERGY. Not only was my
understanding of Shakespeare and his theatre expanded, I was fortunate
enough to make break throughs in my acting work with the support of
international professional artists and world class instructors." Raoul
Bhaneja, Graduate 2002

"Acting on Shakespeare's Globe is one of the best experiences a
classical actor who loves Shakespeare can have. The Masters open up the
text for you. The audience-actor relationship ... is beyond anything I
have ever experienced in any other theatre." Florence MacGregor,
Graduate 2001

The Shakespeare Globe Centre of Canada is accepting audtion applications
for the 2003 International Artistic Residence for Professional Theatre
Artists at the Globe Theatre in London, England.

The Fellowship Idea
Founder Sam Wanamaker called Shakespeare's Globe 'a stage for the
world'. The International Artistic Residence for Professional Theatre
Artists aims to introduce the unique playing space of the faithfully
reconstructed Globe Theatre to actors from the different creative
traditions of its affiliated Shakespeare Globe Centres around the world.
It forms part of an ongoing commitment to make Shakespeare's Globe a
truly international centre for the understanding and practice of
Shakespeare in performance.

The International Artistic Residence runs from Monday 18th August to
Tuesday 16th September 2003 (a total of 31 nights from Sunday 17th
August to Tuesday 16th September inclusive). It aims to share the
discoveries of the Globe's first six full theatre seasons with
professional artists seeking to extend their experience of the work of
Shakespeare and his contemporaries.

While at Shakespeare's Globe, participants will follow an intensive
four-week programme of voice, movement, verse and acting work designed
to respond to the specific challenges of the playing space. They will
work as an ensemble six days per week (approximate hours: 9am to 6pm,
Monday to Saturday), with as much access to the stage as the theatre
season schedule allows. In addition, there will be the opportunity for
some individual tuition. Participants should be aware that movement
classes may be quite physical. Some optional evening activities will be
scheduled. The programme will culminate in an evening of performance on
the Globe stage on Monday 15th September 2003.

The Residence will be led by the Globe's resident Master of Play/Words
and supported by the resident Masters of Voice and Movement - all of
whom have worked closely with the Globe Theatre Company since the
theatre opened in 1997 and who have since established themselves
internationally as Globe specialists.

Participants will be permitted free access to the Yard (standing area
within the Globe Theatre) to observe performances by the Globe Theatre
Company.

For more information, including biographies and interviews with the
Masters and the participants from the 2001 and 2002 programmes, please
see www.shakespeares-globe.org.

The 2003 Residence

For twelve professional theatre artists, preferably with previous
experience of classical acting in a major theatre. All participants must
be happy to work as part of an international company, and should relish
the freedom to explore lessons learned from the Globe architecture with
the resident Masters of Play/Words, Voice and Movement.

Please note: this programme is not targeted at teachers and education
practitioners, but primarily focused on stage and performance techniques
for the working actor. It is not designed to turn artists into English
Globe actors - merely to share the experience of the Globe so that
participants can return to their own culture of playing Shakespeare with
something to share of the experience of original playing conditions,
having enriched their own acting careers during the programme.

In selecting the 2003 participants, Shakespeare's Globe and SGCs aim to
achieve a balance between countries and genders.

Please send your photo and resume, along with a brief statement
outlining what you know of the Globe Theatre in London, why you are
interested in the Artistic Residency program, and how you envision using
this training once you are back in Canada, to:
