Ignatieff Theatre, 15 Devonshire Place, Toronto (just south of the

THE SEA was first produced in London, England in 1973. It is a
thrilling and unusual play set in Edwardian times in a small coastal
village. The
plot is a simple one. Willy Carson survives when the boat in which he
is sailing capsizes in a terrible storm. He meets Rose Jones, the girl
to
which his drowned friend was engaged, and in the events following the
storm falls in love with her. On to this, Bond has grafted a fantastic
sub-plot
about a mad draper who believes the town is to be invaded by beings from
outer space.

Edward Bond has often been referred to as England's modern clacissist.
Critic Herbert Kretzmer wrote about THE SEA: "Last night Bond set out
to
make us laugh. Not being a man of frivolous mind, it comes as no
surprise to discover that Bond has concoted his comedy out of themes of
death and madness."
